Cider is a global drink , with very unique traditions in different countries . In this article, we explore how Spain, France, England and even Japan celebrate this drink — and how Alvora draws inspiration from these cultures to create a cider with a Portuguese soul .
Cider is a drink with ancient roots and unique traditions in many parts of the world. Although it is still gaining ground in Portugal, in many countries toasting with cider is part of culture, ritual and identity.
Here are some interesting facts that also inspired the creation of Alvora:
🇪🇸 Asturias, Spain
In the Asturias region, cider is poured from above — in a gesture called escanciar — to aerate and release aromas. It is drunk immediately and with respect for tradition.
🇬🇧 England
The English love cider. There are pubs that specialize in it! There, cider ranges from sweet to dry and is considered a drink as traditional as beer itself.
🇫🇷 Normandy and Brittany
In France, especially in Normandy, cider is served with crepes and cheese dishes. It is elegant, with fine bubbles, very similar to the one that inspired our Brut Sparkling Wine.
🇯🇵 Japan
Yes, there is cider in Japan too! And it is increasingly present on drinks menus as a sophisticated and natural alternative to wine or sake.
🇵🇹 Portugal
Here, there is still a long way to go. But we feel that Portuguese consumers are ready to discover cider with a different perspective — more attentive, more curious, more aware.
Alvora was born with this spirit: inspired by the world, rooted in Portugal.
